The Classics of Modern Furniture. Although Alivar is a relatively new company, having been formed in 1984, it is based on a marketing concept elaborated in 1967 by the founders. The idea was to produce a collection of models called "The Classics of Modern Furniture" which was to include all those models which are considered part of the history of furniture design and are included, as such, in the literature, museum collections, etc.
It should be noted that in the late 1960's the classics of modern furniture were not generally known by the public and very few books and articles on the subject had, as yet, been published.
While a re-edition of Le Courbusier had been done by Heidi Weber in 1959 and a re-edition of several models of Marcel Breuer by Dino Gavina in 1962, the concept of a full collection of classic models, concentrating upon the models rather them the authors was a totally new idea in 1967.

Emille Gallé was one of the leading figures of the Art Nouveau movement in France, and founder of the famous École de Nancy. A polymath and committed social activist, he was best known for his glasswork and faience. Born in 1909 in Switzerland, Janette Laverrière studied at the Allgemeine Gewerbeschule, Basel, and trained in her father's architect's practice. In 1931, she began working for Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann and married the decorator Maurice Pré, with whom she worked until 1945. At the International Exhibition of arts and techniques in 1937 in Paris, they exhibited Le Pied-à-terre d'un archéologue alongside Maxime Old's work. With her separation from Maurice Pré, Janette Laverrière evolved towards making inexpensive and innovative furniture. As early as 1950, her works were bought by the French state and featured in the Mobilier national collection. Her most significant large building projects were the furnishing of the presidential palace at Niamey in Niger and the Swiss Hospital in Paris. In her work covering most of the 20th century, one finds a simplicity and a poetry of which her mirrors are a powerful illustration. She started making mirrors in 1936 and is still designing them today.

Le Corbusier (1887-1965), one of the world's best known and most influential architects, also created a vast oeuvre of interior and furniture designs. The chaise-longue LC4 and the armchair LC2, created in collaboration with Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand, are modern classics. While the list of publications on his architecture and the iconic designs of the 1920s is long, no comprehensive account of Le Corbusier's complete oeuvre of furniture designs and interiors has been published to date.
