The compendium of chester gold & sylver Marks 1570 to 1962

Ridgway M. H. - Priestley P. T. - Antiques Collectors Club

    105.00 €   remise 5%  65.00 €

This is the first publication in a single work of all known Chester punch marks, and continues the tradition of the standard volumes of Jackson, Grimwade, Culme and Pickford. It is also the first time that the twentieth-century Chester marks have been published. It is produced in dictionary format, in alphabetical order from 1570, the date of the earliest known mark, to 1962 at which time the Chester assay office was closed. The authors, both members of the silver society, were given unlimited access to the Chester assay office records covering 1686 to 1962, and to the Chester Goldsmith's Company records dating from the 16th century. The compendium has four sections. The preface provides an historical background and details of all extant records and copper plates. Part 1 is devoted to assay office marks, with a full set of date letter tables to assist the reader in dating wares. Part 2 covers nearly 10,000 entries for makers' marks, including pictograms and monograms. Finally, the appendices include items on assay volumes and charges, thimble makers, and Liverpool watchcase makers. Since over 2,000 of the entries have Birmingham addresses, the new work will also enhance available information on jewellers and silversmiths working in this important trade center. The format of the marks' tables and the extensive index will also allow future research into the relationships between companies and agents.

Moll Silver + Gold

Grotkamp-Schepers - Joppien - Spielmann - Arnoldsche

For disciples of Pythagoras and Plato the world’s harmony is reflected in the basic forms of the circle, square and triangle. In his work the silversmith Wilfried Moll from Hamburg hardly thinks about these speculative doctrines, which the Renaissance and later Bauhaus paid so much attention to. But he consciously strove – without resting on theories – for ideal form and proportion. Through this his work can stand among the long silversmithing tradition, which began with Wenzel Jamnitzer in the sixteenth century.
Moll’s objects are not spectacular – they are beautiful! When you see them with your own eyes you can sense the very development process – in which time is slowed down. “For me, there’s no wasted time”, says the artist himself. And so works including silver objects, cutlery and also jewellery have developed over the years, which are comprehensively presented for the first time in this publication. Many leading museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York acquired his works as “exemplary examples” for their collections.
Since 1965 there has been a kindred sentiment to his life partner, the jewellery artist Gerda Moll. Next to clarity and stringency, lightness became the most important characteristic of her rings, pendants and necklaces. She abandoned decor completely; the modular parts of her jewellery pieces comply with ornamental working series – thus fulfilling the function of the jewellery.
For the first time and in large format illustrations this publication presents the work of the silversmith Wilfried Moll. Juxtaposed with the jewellery objects of Gerda Moll, the timeless beauty of both works is unveiled. The prolific interaction between the enduring artists and life partnership over the last nearly fifty years becomes apparent. To take part in this is a prize in itself – a “sterling time”!

Silver boxes

Delieb Eric - Antiques Collectors Club

NOT AVAILABLE

The silver box has fascinated and intrigued collectors for many centuries. It is perhaps safe to say that no other objets de vertu have attracted such vivid attention from maker and collector alike.

This book is a comprehensive study of the subject which concentrates on the development of the silver box in England from the sixteenth to the late nineteenth centuries. Because the interest of collectors lies not so much in the shape or type of boxes as in the wide variety of uses to which they have been put and the splendid enrichment lavished upon them, there is a penetrating analysis of the roots and derivations of ornament. The full colour illustrations show boxes with as many diverse forms and uses as possible.

The term box covers any receptacle (unless it is a vessel) whether it is a snuffbox, a pyx or a lancet case for use in phlebotomy, as long as it possesses a lid, hinged or otherwise. The usual snuffboxes and vinaigrettes appear in plenty but they have been carefully selected to show the ingenuity of silver craftsmen. More importantly perhaps we find the splendid variety of special purpose silver boxes: religious, dental and medical, skippet and seal, Masonic, jewel caskets, sweetmeat boxes, pomanders - there is even the unique sumptuous Henry VII Barber-Surgeon's case of circa 1512 with its glowing enamels.

There is much hitherto unpublished material including pieces from private collections and articles from Livery Companies and other institutions.

Eric Delieb was a London antique silver dealer, who conducted a highly successful business on both sides of the Atlantic and also devoted much of his time to research into Old English Silver. Author of a standard bibliography of books on hallmarks, many articles in antique journals and Investing in Silver, his name had become particularly associated with Collectors' Silver, a subject that formed the basis of his world-wide correspondence.
