The Japanese belt accessories for men known as netsuke aroused great interest in Europe already at the end of the 19th century. Today they have become special, highly-prized collector’s items all over the world. The main subjects are mythical creatures, gods of popular religion, and exotic animals and also depictions of Europeans, particularly Dutchmen, who fascinated the Japanese in the 18th and 19th century. The craftsmanship is of incomparable perfection, and the materials include boxwood, ivory, horn, coral, tortoise-shell and much else. Famous artists like Yoshimura Shûzan (1700–1773) and Ohara Mitsuhiro (1810–1878) created masterpieces which strongly influenced this art form. The two volumes present more than 850 objects from the collection of Anne and Christian Trumpf, one of the most important netsuke collections worldwide, with in-depth commentary and lavish illustrations. The author, Dr. Patrizia Jirka-Schmitz, is a well-known scholar in this field. A new standard work on netsuke – an area of collecting that over the last few years has grown immensely on an international scale.

Netsuke, the Japanese male belt ornaments of outstanding craftsmanship, aroused much interest in the Western world already in the late 19th century. They appeal by their variety of shapes and the sheer endless number of motifs and still continue to fascinate a wide audience; they have become coveted collectors’ items worldwide, as the most recent auction results emphatically show. The attraction of netsuke lies in the expressive power achieved within a small space and the masterly execution in the most varied materials, such as wood, ivory and horn. The subjects illustrate almost all aspects of Japanese culture: Buddhist figures, gods of good luck, animals, plants, fruit and flowers, literary characters, foreigners, children, masks and occupations, down to the prosaic paraphernalia of everyday life. One of the world’s most comprehensive netsuke collections is the Werdelmann Collection at the museum kunst palast Düsseldorf with its almost 1100 objects, the result of more than thirty-five years of committed collecting. The exhibition presents a unique survey of this art form from the 17th to the 20th century. All 1070 objects are reproduced in brilliant colour photographs and described according to the most recent scholarly research. An extensive list of signatures with commentary rounds off the publication. Patrizia Jirka-Schmitz, an acknowledged authority on netsuke, has been responsible for the scholarly evaluation and interpretation of the collection. Highly knowledgeable about the stylistic history of netsuke and its artists and regional characteristics, she has produced an important work of reference. Ideally supplementing our successful book on the Trumpf Collection of netsuke at the Lindenmuseum in Stuttgart, the present publication is bound to prove a sought-after new reference book for collectors, connoisseurs and aficionados of netsuke.

Over 970 vivid images of netsuke are shown, representing Japanese life, customs, religion, professions, art, history, and legends. The netsukes are organized by subject, allowing readers to rapidly find those that interest them most. The succinct text introduces, defines, and describes the various types of netsukes and helps identify the subjects represented. Additionally, important evaluating tips are provided, along with a bibliography. This book is a must for anyone interested in Oriental art.

 

This book is a comprehensive study of the Japanese Okimono's history during the Meiji Era (1868-1912) based on the Dr. A.M. Kanter's Collection with over 150 illustrations of Japanese ivory carvings, bronzes and shibayama objects. This guide covers all aspects on the subject; the author has been granted permission from the Shoto Museum of Art in Tokyo, to reproduce their entire archive listing of Japanese artists active during this period. All the various signature marks are reproduced alongside the English translation, an essential reference to facilitate collectors, dealers and scholars. Illustrations are provided showing how to identify all the Japanese forms of art signatures used which adds greatly to its interest for collectors. Guidance has been given to help collectors identify the various materials used for carving: ivory, walrus, hippo and bone, and how to care for these fine objects. The Japanese mythological beliefs and folk tales are explained as well as the various metalwork and shibayama techniques.
An antiques dealer since 1991, Italian-born Laura Bordignon began to specialise is Japanese art in 1997, becoming a member of the British Antique Dealers Association in 2000. Since then, she has been consulted by many collectors worldwide, with requests for guidance on expanding their existing collections or to start new ones. The fast growing interest in Japanese Okimono of the Meiji Period has been the main catalyst for this book, as very little has been published on the subject.
