Les orientalistes peintres voyageurs T I

Thornton Lynne - Acr

    104.00 €   remise 5%  98.80 €

At the end of the 19th century, numerous painters succumbed to the charms of the Orient. Travel to distant lands was easier, and artists brought back voluptuous images filled with sun and colour. The noted specialist Lynne Thornton has studied almost 150 painters, from Delacroix to Ziem. Her fine book Les Orientalistes, Peintres Voyageurs features numerous lesser known masters and is an essential reference work for collectors. It is also a marvellous invitation to travel.

La femme dans la peinture orientaliste

Thornton Lynne - Acr

    89.00 €   remise 5%  84.55 €

Of all the customs and traditions concerning Oriental women, the harem is certainly the most familiar and misunderstood. Travelling painters, writers and poets from the West, have all given free reign to their imagination and fantasies on the subject. To such an extent that in all the paintings from the beginning of the 18th century right up until the 1940s, reality is inseparably linked to the artist’s imagination. Besides the theme of odaliscs and almahs, this book also focuses on daily life in the harem. Over 150 prestigious Orientalist painters are listed in individual monographs.

Couleurs de la corne d'or peintres voyageurs à la Sublime Porte

Hitzel Frédéric - Acr

    104.00 €   remise 5%  98.80 €

Artists have always traveled, with a goal - conscious or unconscious - of putting into practice the advice of Montaigne : "Travel is in my opinion a very profitable exercise ; the soul is there continually employed in observing new and unknown things, and I do not know, as I have often said, a better school wherein to model life than by incessantly exposing to it the diversity of so many other lives, fancies, and usances" (Essays, chapter 17). While few artists visited the land of the Great Turk in the 16th and 17th centuries, the splendor and strangeness of the Levant were very popular. Then, in the 18th century, "Turqueries" became all the rage, even before the country was seen in the historic paintings relating the Egyptian Campaign (1798-1801). In the 19th century, French and British painters played a key role in helping people discover the Turkey of that period. This book offers a trip back into these times and places.

Les africanistes peintres voyageurs

Thornton Lynne - Acr

    89.00 €   remise 5%  84.55 €

This book retraces the history of European painters who travelled through Black Africa between 1860 and 1960. Some journeyed in the company of explorers, or as part of military, ethnographic, scientific or journalistic missions, others discovered Africa through their own means. Accompanying their works are the tales of their adventures and experiences taken from their journals, books and papers. Over 1150 artists are listed in individual monographs.

Les orientalistes des écoles allemande et autrichienne

Haja - Wimmer - Acr

    104.00 €   remise 5%  98.80 €

The book by Martina Haja and Günther Wimmer comes to fill a vacuum and, for the first time, offers an overall view of the complex, many-sided world of nineteenth-century German and Austrian Orientalist painting. This book, bearing on over 70 German, Austro-Hungarian and Swiss traveller-painters, gives us an idea of the richness, the singularities and the multiple contradictions of the Orientalist painting of German-speaking countries.

Les orientalistes de l'école américaine

Ackerman Gerald M. - Acr

    104.00 €   remise 5%  98.80 €

Between 1843 and 1922, American artists travelled to the Near East and North Africa, painting all that they discovered. Edwin Lord Weeks and Frederick Bridgman are amongst the most famous but there was also Francis Bacon, Samuel Colman, Swain Gifford and many others who specialised in Oriental compositions.

Through their biographies, activities and travels, the author has endeavoured to let the artists speak for themselves, narrating their adventures and explaining their objectives, aided by correspondence, travel journals and various articles and books.

Gerald Ackerman, born 1928, graduated from Berkeley in 1952 and went on to do a PhD in Art and Archaeology at Princeton. He is an author and lecturer who taught at many colleges and universities across America between 1958 and 1994. He is also the author of Les Orientalistes de l École britannique among other works.

The common denominator linking the artists in this book is that they all went to the Near East or North Africa and painted the experiences drawn from their travels. The "Orient" in question covers a geographic area which spread from the Balkans through the Maghreb down to Marrakech. Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt and Sudan were a part of this vaste territory as well. This "covering" of the Orient occurred during the 19th century, in between Bonaparte’s campaign in Egypt and the First World War.

Les orientalistes de l'école espagnole

Dizy Caso Eduardo - Acr

The term "0rientalism" refers to the manner in which Western artists expressed their vision of the Orient from the beginning of the 19th century. If each nation’s particular historical relationship with the East influenced the way in which its artists represented this vision, that of the Spanish 0rientalits is unique owing to the special relationship that had long-existed between the Iberian Peninsula and the 0rient. In effect, for more than a thousand years a large portion of its southern territory (then known as Al-Andalus) was in intimate contact with the historical and cultural currents of the Orient, and in particular, the cultural influences of the Arabo-Islamic world. A detailed comparison of the work of the Spanish 0rientalists with that of other European artists of the same period also reveals certain similarities. The reason for this can be found in the common bonds which united them to this movement, particularly in France and Italy. The present work offers an exhaustive compilation of the works and biographies of the Spanish 0rientalists ; its purpose is to introduce the reader to a fascinating and little-known chapter in the history of Spanish painting.

La vie et l'oeuvre d'Etienne Dinet

Benchikou - Brahimi - Acr

    104.00 €   remise 5%  98.80 €

Etienne Dinet’s fortuitous discovery of Southern Algeria in 1885 completely altered his life and work. His deep attachment led to his complete integration into Moslem society with his conversion to Islam in 1913. This lavishly illustrated monograph highlights the important stages in the artistic and spiritual journey of this original artist who produced such sensitive, intimate and solemn work. A catalogue raisonné illustrating his work constitutes the second half of this book.

Eugène Fromentin 1820-1876 monographie révisée et catalogue des dessins

Thompson - Wright - Acr

    104.00 €   remise 5%  98.80 €

Since the first edition of this book, La Vie et l’œuvre d’Eugène Fromentin, published in 1987 and awarded the Roger Bonniot Prize by the Académie de Saintonge in 1988, over sixty paintings and drawings by Eugène Fromentin have appeared on the market. To complete the Correspondance générale of this painter and writer, published in 1995, and his intellectual biography (Beaux-arts et Belles-lettres : la vie d’Eugène Fromentin), published in 2006, the authors, James Thompson and Barbara Wright, have produced a revised and enlarged version of their work. To accompany these new images, the text has been up-dated and some black and white illustrations have been replaced by colour. Furthermore, James Thompson and Barbara Wright have added, as an Appendix, an illustrated catalogue of nearly all the drawings in the family collection, a collection which remained virtually intact from the death of Eugène Fromentin in 1876 until that of his great-grandson, Erik Dahl, in 1986. This catalogue bears testimony to a unique collection, before its dispersal. Since their authenticity is beyond question, the items in this catalogue constitute a valuable resource in the identification of future paintings which may surface on the market. This new edition will provide the basis for detailed genetical studies of the major Orientalist paintings by Fromentin, while illuminating his talents as a draughtsman.

Alexandre Roubtzoff, une vie en Tunisie

Dubreucq Patrick - Acr

    104.00 €   remise 5%  98.80 €

Alexandre Roubtzoff is unknown by the general public, having spent his life fleeing from journalists. His reserved nature and desire for discretion at a time when exhibitionism reigned, greatly hampered the growth of his reputation. Yet he did not disappear as a complete stranger when he died in Tunis in November 1949. The warm tribute he received proved his strong position within the Tunisian art world. His name will remain forever tied to Tunisia as evidence of the rich artistic creation in Tunis between the two wars.

Les orientalistes de l'école italienne

Juler Caroline - Acr

NOT AVAILABLE

Over 150 artists from the Italian School of Orientalists are illustrated with listings of their exhibitions and individual bibliographical indexes. Their works, for the most part watercolours, demonstrate the fertile imagination of these painters. Some of them did travel to North Africa and the Middle East, but most worked in studios at home. This book sheds light on the different aspects of this Italian art which drew its sources from the Renaissance.

Eugène Fromentin

Thompson - Wright - Acr

NOT AVAILABLE

The Orient pervades the whole of Eugène Fromentin’s painted work and travel writings. Born at La Rochelle, he grew up contemplating the vanishing lines of the Atlantic horizon. This perspective prepared him to confront another great immensity which seemed to him like a colourless sea : the desert. Fromentin studied the Islamic world with discretion, accumulating extensive anthropological and linguistic pieces of information without necessarily using them in his work. His vision is of the atmosphere of places and surroundings rather than dramatic events.

This catalogue is the result of 25 years of research. Approximately 700 paintings and 70 sculptures have been inventoried through archives, old State documents, catalogues and correspondence with collectors.

La vie et l'oeuvre de Jacques Majorelle

Marcilhac Félix - Acr

NOT AVAILABLE

Jacques Majorelle grew up in France. He was the son of a famous cabinetmaker from Nancy, Louis Majorelle. When he began his travels, he was immediately attracted to the South of Morocco. The sensitivity of his work distinguishes him amongst the Orientalist painters. He sought to understand the subtle nuances of life in the country he loved. Whether painting landscapes from the Atlas or scenes within a casbah, he infused his subjects with poetry and captured the authentic personality of the South.
