Thomas Bush Hardy was one of the most successful and prolific artists in an era when English marine painting in watercolour reached its zenith. He was one of the few artists who took the trouble to study, understand and then reproduce all the elements of a successful marine watercolour.

As the many illustrations in this books show, Hardy had an enviable ability to capture the atmosphere, be it peaceful or dramatic, of each occasion. Most of the pictures used here are held in private collections and include many of his finest works. Although Hardy is mentioned in many books covering the Victorian era, this is the first detailed and fully illustrated study of his comparatively short but fascinating career.

Une présentation très détaillée des 75 commandes royales et privées ainsi que l’analyse des œuvres présentées dans les Salons permettent de bien appréhender la vie et l’œuvre de François Desportes. Cette monographie abondamment illustrée met en évidence le style très soigné et très réaliste de ses œuvres qui témoignent d’une observation très poussée. Pour les amateurs et chercheurs, la monographie peut également être acquise avec le catalogue raisonné qui la complète. Ces deux ouvrages sont proposés dans un coffret.

Etienne Dinet’s fortuitous discovery of Southern Algeria in 1885 completely altered his life and work. His deep attachment led to his complete integration into Moslem society with his conversion to Islam in 1913. This lavishly illustrated monograph highlights the important stages in the artistic and spiritual journey of this original artist who produced such sensitive, intimate and solemn work. A catalogue raisonné illustrating his work constitutes the second half of this book.

Since the first edition of this book, La Vie et l’œuvre d’Eugène Fromentin, published in 1987 and awarded the Roger Bonniot Prize by the Académie de Saintonge in 1988, over sixty paintings and drawings by Eugène Fromentin have appeared on the market. To complete the Correspondance générale of this painter and writer, published in 1995, and his intellectual biography (Beaux-arts et Belles-lettres : la vie d’Eugène Fromentin), published in 2006, the authors, James Thompson and Barbara Wright, have produced a revised and enlarged version of their work. To accompany these new images, the text has been up-dated and some black and white illustrations have been replaced by colour. Furthermore, James Thompson and Barbara Wright have added, as an Appendix, an illustrated catalogue of nearly all the drawings in the family collection, a collection which remained virtually intact from the death of Eugène Fromentin in 1876 until that of his great-grandson, Erik Dahl, in 1986. This catalogue bears testimony to a unique collection, before its dispersal. Since their authenticity is beyond question, the items in this catalogue constitute a valuable resource in the identification of future paintings which may surface on the market. This new edition will provide the basis for detailed genetical studies of the major Orientalist paintings by Fromentin, while illuminating his talents as a draughtsman.

The works are presented in chronological order and in their original finished state, illustrated in colour or black and white. The Orient pervades the whole of Eugène Fromentin’s painted work and travel writings. Born at La Rochelle, he grew up contemplating the vanishing lines of the Atlantic horizon. This perspective prepared him to confront another great immensity which seemed to him like a colourless sea : the desert. Fromentin studied the Islamic world with discretion, accumulating extensive anthropological and linguistic pieces of information without necessarily using them in his work. His vision is of the atmosphere of places and surroundings rather than dramatic events.
