The first painter of "open air" of his country and founder of modern painting in Romania, Nicolae Grigorescu managed to elaborate a remarkable synthesis between the assimilation of the avant-garde, which he had contacts with during his travels throughout Europe and local characteristics. His peasant origins, his debut as a painter of religious scenes in monasteries prefigure in no sense the scope of his artistic career, resolutely European, in line with the extraordinary wave of advanced painting on the continent.
Thanks to a grant awarded in 1861 to study at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, he meets the greatest artists, from Millet and Corot in Barbizon through the young Renoir and Monet.
As the leading figure of modem art in Romania, Grigorescu painted in a palette of intense light everyday scenes of his country. Its people, the countryside, flocks, lakes and forests, fields and homes have more then inspired him. The 95 works presented in the exhibition and shown in this catalogue are the expression of a masterly refinement combined with a gentle melancholy.

Edy Legrand was one of those artists who, by their imagination and then their travels, lead us into a world of dreams and colours. Far removed from all the trends in painting, independent by nature, occasionally closer to his literary friends than to his painter friends, he always endeavoured to express what he loved. Together illustrator, lithographer, animal painter, decorator, after 1933 he became the spokesman for Morocco where he had settled, not far from his friend Majorelle. It was at this time that he was most successful in reconciling lyricism and harmony, intelligence and sensibility. As he himself said, filled with a sense of eternity, having found in this part of the world a representation of everlasting mankind, as if beyond time, ruled by the great laws of the sky and the earth, he would execute illustrations of the Bible, as well as the Book of the Apocalypse with an essay by Henri Bosco.

An unstinting worker, Maximilien Luce has left us a rich and diverse body of work. This book gives prominence to his Neo-lmpressionist period, which is the most celebrated, without neglecting the other aspects of his production. Luce was a magnificent colourist and described his contemporary world with passion: he was the bard of the Pays noir and the Paris building sites. He also wanted to modernize history painting and, being a highly skilled draughtsman, he placed his talents as an illustrator at the service of his anarchist convictions. The different facets of his art are evoked here in essays written by specialists and illustrated by a selection of over 120 reproductions. A detailed chronology of the artist's life completes the picture.

Jacques Majorelle grew up in France. He was the son of a famous cabinetmaker from Nancy, Louis Majorelle. When he began his travels, he was immediately attracted to the South of Morocco. The sensitivity of his work distinguishes him amongst the Orientalist painters. He sought to understand the subtle nuances of life in the country he loved. Whether painting landscapes from the Atlas or scenes within a casbah, he infused his subjects with poetry and captured the authentic personality of the South.
