Antoine-Louis Barye's animal sculptures are celebrated as much for their technical brilliance and painstaking detail as for their uncanny resemblance to their subjects. Principally known as an animal sculptor, he was also a consummate modeler of the human form. This volume gathers Barye's works from the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, whose collection of the artist's work is second only to that of the Louvre. In addition to the artist's magnificent and anatomically accurate sculptures, the book also features his often-overlooked paintings and drawings. Nicholas Goodison revisits his earlier exhaustive study of Boulton's ormolu ornaments and his manufactory at Soho, and unearths new and previously unpublished material. This book covers the factory between the years 1768 and 1782, the methods by which ornaments were designed, made and marketed and Boulton's own keen interest in promoting the business. It is a comprehensive account of the range of vases, candelabra, clock cases and other ormolu ornaments and of the customers who bought them. The author has once again combined meticulous research with a narrative style that makes the book a pleasure to read. Goldscheider, a Viennese factory (est. 1885), soon sped to the top of European ceramics makers. Figures and vessels of faience and terracotta as well as bronze and alabaster, all of top quality in respect of form and workmanship, were created in the Historicist, Jugendstil and Art Déco period styles. A crucial factor was collaboration with distinguished sculptors and ceramicists of the day – including Demetre Chiparus, Walter Bosse and Josef Lorenzl – who were responsible for a great many of the Goldscheider designs. This success story was quashed by National Socialist aryanisation in 1938: the Goldscheider family was forced to emigrate, the firm was sold and the new proprietor was unable to sustain the high aesthetic quality standard. The Goldscheider brothers did manage to open new ceramics businesses while in exile in the US and England and Walter Goldscheider even returned to Vienna after the Second World War to resume his post as managing director of his old firm; however, in the 1950s the great ceramics tradition of this venerable Viennese business ended when it was sold to the German Carstens company. Although a huge clientele of Goldscheider ceramics collectors exists worldwide, there have been virtually no publications dealing with this important field for collectors. Now a catalogue of works with information on more than 4,000 models (including over 1,600 reproductions of models) and an extensive history of the company (with over 400 colour illustrations) is available. Further, our publication provides an exhaustive index of artists as well as a complete overview of marks.

Johann Philipp Ferdinand Preiss (1882-1943) was the most prolific sculptor of the Art Deco period in Germany; he combined ivory, bronze, onyx and marble to create the most dazzling sculptures of his day.

Preiss entered into an apprenticeship with his uncle, a master ivory carver, at the age of sixteen, following the death of his parents. He went on to become the most important Art Deco sculptor in Germany, and indeed one of the most accomplished in the whole of Europe during the Nazi period.

This book, the only work devoted entirely to this subject, follows the development of ivory carving in Erbach, Germany, focusing on the life and work of one of the country's most talented and prodigious sons. The political climate which Preiss and other artists were forced to endure during this time, its difficulties, constraints and influences on their work, is also explored. Extensive research into Nazi archives, interviews with family members, recently unearthed documents and the most comprehensive collection of sumptuous colour illustrations truly enable the extraordinary talents of this formidable artist to shine.

In late 2006 the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) purchased its first work by a member of the Bugatti family, Carlo Bugatti’s Throne chair, circa 1900. From this initial acquisition the idea of an exhibition grew, until the gallery announced it would stage Australia’s first exhibition of the work of the Bugatti family in early 2009. The exhibition will showcase the work of three generations of craftsmen, artists and designers: furniture by Carlo Bugatti, animal sculptures by his son Rembrandt, and the legendary cars designed by Carlo’s eldest son Ettore and Ettore’s son Jean. The Bugatti family represents a fascinating and unique story in the history of art, design and automobiles during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
