Antique phonographs enjoyed a vigorous commercial existence 100 years ago. The market they inhabited was as filled with options, accessories, gadgets and gizmos as today's late-night television is populated with slicers, dicers, car waxes and beauty secrets. Collectors have acquired, examined and used these peripherals for years, but little has been written about them. In an effort to reveal more about the fascinating accessories, horns, storage cabinets, advertising and ephemera which surrounded the antique phonograph, the authors have examined nearly 20,000 pages of primary documents, and photographed examples from over 35 collections. Over 500 color photographs illustrate nearly 700 items from the early years of recorded sound. To finally discover this long-lost aspect of the antique phonograph hobby is something akin to Dorothy's first faltering steps into the Land of Oz. The world is suddenly in Technicolor! There is suddenly more excitement, more romance, more fun-as readers of this book will happily discover.

The antique phonograph is the center of a beautiful, brilliant, and sometimes bizarre universe of accessories. The commercial development of the phonograph, during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, inspired a host of adjunct technology, from fancifully-painted flower horns to record storage disguised as furniture. Here are gadgets any snake oil salesman would be proud of - objects that claimed to make the phonograph louder, softer, improve the "tone," or remove the scratching of the needle. There are dazzling horns that call attention to the phonograph, or imposing cabinets that hide it completely. Each element of the talking machine, from its whirring spring motor to its polished woodwork, inspired bursts of inventive genius as brilliant and colorful as the nighttime sky on the Fourth of July. To aid the collector there is a guide to current values. Award winning authors Timothy C. Fabrizio and George F. Paul, in their sixth Schiffer book, take the reader on a lively tour of these utterly entertaining objects.

Kick off your shoes, put on your sunglasses, and get ready for a nostalgic trip back to the heyday of portable music. Transistor radios, those quintessential '50s and '60s accompaniments for the beach, backyard, and shirt pocket, have become one of the most popular and colorful collectors' items of recent years. Packed with over 460 full color photographs, this book provides an overview of the endless variety of transistor radio types, sizes, and styles produced during the prolific early years of their development. Over 1,000 radios are featured here, from American manufacturers such as Admiral, Bulova, Emerson, Philco, Regency, and Zenith and from Japanese manufacturers such as Hitachi, Koyo, NEC, Realtone, Sony, and Toshiba. Each radio is identified by manufacturer, model number, number of transistors, special features, country of origin, and date. Wherever possible, the sets are grouped to show radios which share common features, such as manufacturer, marketing organization, type of radio, or style. Shown as well are the color variations and cabinet variations which exist for many of the most popular radios. You'll learn which of the manufacturers marketed their sets under different names or to different organizations and which sets, although bearing different names, are virtually identical. A complete value guide is included to help collectors determine the value of various models with similar styling and features.

“A radio for every room" was the slogan of American radio manufacturers between the late twenties and early forties, an age when table radios not only connected Americans to the world, but also became objects of beauty in their own right. Table radios were among the first consumer goods to be made of plastic, a material that lent itself to flamboyant experiments in mass production and innovative design. Radios: The Golden Age presents a dazzling collection of vintage radios, artifacts of a golden era of product design that was marked by unparalleled creativity and ingenuity. Full-color photographs depict every detail of these classic radios, from a "Smokerette" with a built-in pipe rack, to a round Trophy baseball radio, to a model featuring cowboy star Hopalong Cassidy galloping across the dial. This delightful volume will enchant collectors and nostalgia buffs alike and will serve as a valuable resource for those interested in creative product design.
