The borderland between India and Burma with its individualistic aesthetics, along with the fascination of headhunting underwent fundamental cultural changes when the British colonial power extended its influence in the 19th century. By means of a detailed ?pictorial ethnography? the author reconstructs on the basis of the photographic heritage of the German ethnologist Hans-Eberhard Kauffmann (believed to be lost and then rediscovered) and the photographs of his Austrian colleague Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf the aesthetic und cultural reality of the Nagas in the 1930s. This publication opens up a fascinating insight into the culture of the Naga tribes in the Eastern foothills of the Himalayas. Based on around 400 historical photographs, the author reconstructs the encounters between the Nagas, the British colonial empire and two Germanspeaking explorers, their pictorial worlds and ideologies. An analytical masterpiece of retrospective field research drawing on visual testimonies to a bygone age- a trailblazing experiment in how to approach archive collections- and an original contribution to visual anthropology.
