Son of the founder of the Devambez company, known for its engravings and art books, André Devambez is a Parisian artist who became famous at the end of the 19th century as a history painter, engraver and illustrator for children.
Trained in Benjamin Constant's studio at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he won the Prix de Rome in 1890, became the official painter of the Ministry of the Air Force in 1934 and was head of the studio at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts between 1929 and 1937.
With realism and enthusiasm, this unclassifiable artist bears witness to the movement of modern life, the appearance of the mythical inventions of his time such as the airplane, the cinematograph or the telephone.
An artist whose career unfolded at the turn of the Belle Epoque, his unexpected point of view on reality made him an artist whose creation sometimes borders on the fantastic.
This extensively illustrated exhibition catalog devoted to André Devambez was co-published by the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes and the Petit Palais, Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris.
