Lucienne Day was part of a new generation of designers who came to the forefront of the British textile industry in the early fifties. Her influential and innovative response to pattern design set a new standard in Britain. They believed that good design should be mass produced for the many and not just the few and that good design could improve the lives of ordinary people. Her breack-througn design "Calix" is now considered to be an iconic twentieth-century textile.
