Oeben's work is one of the most remarkable of the 18th century. His marquetry, of an impeccable technique, makes him one of the greatest masters of the genre. But he is as much attached to the quality of his bronzes as to the ingenuity of his mechanisms. Author of reading tables, Transition commodes, cylinder and flat desks, Louis XVI secretaries, his greatest claim to fame remains the famous Louis XV cylinder desk in Versailles, which he could not complete before his death.
